General Injury Advice

Elbow Pain

What Is It?

The elbow is a hinge joint that allows you to bend your arm. It is made up of bones, bursa (sac), ligaments and tendons. If these structures get injured or inflamed, it can be painful, although the elbow can still be painful even if it is not injured or inflamed.

The most common type of elbow pain is lateral epicondylitis or 'tennis elbow' from overuse but it can be because of bursitis, arthritis, fractures or nerve entrapment.

Do This:

Rest, use an ice pack wrapped with towel, and use support when necessary.

Avoid ‘HARM’ (heat, alcohol, running/sport and massage).

Change or stop any movements that might be causing your symptoms or making them worse.

Simply straighten your elbow out with the palm of your hand facing the floor, and gently pull your fingers toward the underside of your wrist. You should feel a stretch along the back of your forearm. Hold it for 30 seconds. Then flip your forearm over, with your palm facing the ceiling, and push your fingers toward the floor. Hold for 30 seconds.

Strengthening exercises with hand weights – your physiotherapist can prescribe the correct exercises for you.

Do NOT:

Do not perform tasks that put excessive pressure on muscles of the forearm or that include the use of fingers, wrists and forearms in repetitive work involving forceful movement, awkward postures and lack of rest.

Returning To Work:

Use work as part of your recovery and gradually resume normal activities.

Talk to your employer about what you can do at work to help you keep active.
