Shoulder Pain

What Is It?

The shoulder joint is a complex, notably mobile, anatomical part , comprised of bones, ligaments, cartilage, tendons and bursa.

Any of these structures can be injured or inflamed and can cause pain. Shoulder pain is common and most cases will get better with appropriate treatment.

Shoulder pain can also come from other parts of the body and this is called referred pain.

Do This:

Rest and use an ice pack wrapped with towel. Particularly in the first few days after an injury.

Avoid ‘HARM’ (heat, alcohol, running/sport and massage).

When ready, heat packs can help relieve most other types of shoulder pain, particularly if your muscles feel sore and tense.

Gradually increase your physical activities and exercises.

Take pain killers as per doctor's recommendations when necessary.

Do NOT:

Use work as part of your recovery and gradually resume normal activities.

Talk to your employer about what you can do at work to help you keep active.

Talk to your doctor about what you think you can do at work.
