Knee Pain

What Is It?

The knee is a hinge joint , comprised of bones, ligaments, cartilage, tendons and bursa. Any of these structures can be injured or inflamed by awkward movements, falls and collisions, sudden twists, excessive force or overuse.

Common injuries are sprains (overstretched or torn ligaments), strains (overstretched or torn tendons or muscles), cartilage (or meniscal) tears and fractures (broken bones).

Prompt medical attention for any knee injury increases the chances of a full recovery.

What Can You Expect

Common Symptoms

Pain and/or swelling and/or bruising

Reduced range of movement

Difficulty putting weight on affected leg

Hearing or feeling a "pop" in your joint at the time of injury

Do This:

Rest, use an ice pack wrapped with towel, and use a compression bandage when necessary. Particularly in the first few days after an injury.

Elevate your leg.

Avoid ‘HARM’ (heat, alcohol, running/sport and massage).

Take pain killers as per doctor's recommendations when necessary.

Do NOT:

Squat

Kneel

Twist and pivot

Jog

Aerobics, dance

Play sports

Swim using the frog or whip kick

Returning To Work:

Use work as part of your recovery and gradually resume normal activities.

Talk to your employer about what you can do at work to help you keep active.

Talk to your doctor about what you think you can do at work.

When to seek medical attention urgently.

Changes in colour (very red, blue or white) of your knee, leg.

Toes not able to bend or weight bear completely

Any fever

Worsening pain and/or swelling
