Foreign Bodies in the Eye

What Is It?

The most common foreign objects in the eye include dust carried by wind, metal fragments from grinding, and wood particles from drilling or cutting.

Most injuries are minor and, with the right treatment, heal without problems.

What Can You Expect

Common Symptoms

A ‘feeling’ of something being in your eye

Sharp pain in your eye, followed by burning and irritation.

Eye is watery and red.

A scratchy feeling when you blink.

Blurred vision or loss of vision in the affected eye.

More sensitive to bright lights

Do This:

Wash your hands before using drops or ointment on your eyes

Do NOT:

Touch the eye or any contact lens

Rub eye

Try to remove the foreign object yourself

Apply pressure when bandaging the eye

Use contact lenses until doctor has advised you that it is safe to do so

Returning To Work:

In most cases, after the foreign body has been removed, you can return to work either the same day or the following day.

You will be seen 24-48 hrs after the foreign body has been removed from your eye.

When to seek medical attention urgently.

Worsening pain

Vision not improving

See flashes of light
