Minor Head Injury

What Is It?

A concussion (also known as minor head injury, mild head injury or mild traumatic brain injury) can be from a strong impact to the head or body causing the brain to shake back and forth inside the skull, causing mild damage.

Everyone has different recovery times.

What Can You Expect

Common Symptoms

Headaches, nausea or vomits, or feeling tired more than usual

Mild cognitive problems (such as being confused, difficulty concentrating, remembering things, performing complex tasks and mood changes).

Do This:

Use ice packs wrapped in a towel over swollen or painful areas.

Take simple painkillers (such as paracetamol) or as per doctor's recommendation. Have a responsible person with you for the next 24 hours.

Rest quietly for the remainder of the day.

Limit use of mobile phones, television or computers. 

Do NOT:

Play sports or do strenuous activities for 48 hours or until symptoms have gone.

Drive for the next 24 hours.

Drink alcohol or use recreational drugs for at least 48 hours.

Use aspirin or anti-inflammatories as this may increase the risk of bleeding.

Take sedatives or other medication unless instructed by the doctor.

Returning To Work:

You will be reviewed in 24 hours, to make sure you are okay.

In most cases, you can gradually increase your physical activities as long as your symptoms do not get worse.

When to seek medical attention urgently.

A constant headache or a headache that gets worse

Feeling like you will pass out, or have a blackout or seizure

Repeated vomiting

Weakness or numbness involving any part of the body

Increasing confusion

Difficulty staying awake or waking up when you would normally be awake or up difficulties with vision or slurred speech or hearing

Problems in remembering new events or recognising people or places

Any fluid or blood coming from the ear or nose
